Museums
Museums in Woolwich are a great way to learn more about the history of this area. The area is a former military base, and soldiers from the nearby Royal Artillery Barracks train here. Woolwich was also home to a large gun foundry. It also has the Rotunda building, a 19th century building that used to house artillery pieces. It was designed by John Nash and was reconstructed in Woolwich between 1819 and 1822.

Over two million people have served in the Royal Artillery, and the museum’s exhibits tell the tales of their service.
The Royal Garrison Church of St George in Woolwich was damaged by a bomb during World War II. It is now maintained as a memorial garden and contains a Victoria Cross Memorial. In 2011, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded PS396,000 to help with conservation work. The Heritage of London Trust Operations will also employ twenty students to help with the conservation of the church. The church is listed on the English Heritage At Risk Register.

Churches
Woolwich is home to a variety of churches. Among these are the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church. Although it has a long history in the area, there are only a handful of references in local newspapers to the Woolwich Union for Church Services. The union was formed in 1927 and had bylaws that coordinated worship services. As late as 1942, it also offered communion. In addition, it held suppers and fundraisers.
The parish of St Peter’s Church in Woolwich is a Roman Catholic church. Located between Woolwich New Road and Brookhill Road, the church was designed by Augustus Pugin. Although it was never completed to Pugin’s exact design, the church still serves the community of central Woolwich. It is a member of the Province of Southwark and the Archdiocese of Southwark.
John Wilson was a public and church leader in the nineteenth century. He was the pastor of the Woolwich Tabernacle, which later merged with another church, Conduit Road Baptist, and became the Woolwich Central Baptist Church. His leadership influence was felt in the town and throughout the country.
