Thus, they started a private Confederate cemetery on the property.

The plantation sat on more than 1,400 acres of land, with approximately 500 acres (2 km2) dedicated to farming. By the mid-19th century, the plantation was producing corn, wheat, and oats. In addition, the plantation also raised thoroughbred horses. John and Carrie McGavock’s son John continued to farm the plantation until his death in 1893.

Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the Carter House and Carnton Plantation, as well as the grounds and outbuildings. Tours are about an hour long and include admission to the museum store. Carnton Plantation was owned by the McGavock family until 1911, when the estate was donated to the Carnton Association. Lotz House

The Lotz House was first built in 1855 by Johann Albert Lotz, a German immigrant to the United States. He was a piano maker and a master carpenter. He built the house himself, including all the architectural details that showcased his expertise. He even incorporated a piano leg in the stairway newel post.

Winstead Hill Park
